Putting together a basic web page - Hyperlinks.

The software used in this tutorial is Netscape Composer which comes free with the Netscape browser package. This program is a fine program for beginners as well as more experienced programmers. It offers an easy to manage word processor like editor and it handles pictures and tables very well. It is easily mastered by even younger children and can double as a word processor in class, providing instant web pages.

Other major plus points are the excellent built in help and the fool proof saving that ensures all files related to a page are saved in the correct folders.

Before you start - create a new, empty folder for your webpages and graphics on floppy disk or on the computer hard drive.

The toolbar

The toolbar looks similar to that of a word processor. The only major differences being the link and target buttons that are used to make hyperlinks and the Preview button that allows you to get an idea of what the finished web page will look like on the web.

Getting started is very easy. Just start typing (Remember don't go wild with the fonts!)

If this is your first page, make sure you save your page into the new folder every few minutes. Each page that is intended to be part of the site should also be saved into the same folder.

Adding a hyperlink to another website on the Internet.

Before long you will want to add a link or two. If you know the address of a resource or site on the web, why not make it into a link on your website.

1. Highlight the text that you would like to become a link you can click on...

2. When you have selected the text for the link, click on the link icon on the toolbar. A new window will pop up.

3. In the box labelled Link to a page location or local file, type in the full website address. After checking if everything looks right and the web address begins with http://, then click on OK.

Your first link is done!

To check it, just click on preview. If you are connected to the Internet it should work.

Adding a link to another page in your website.

One of the most important types of link is the local link. A hyperlink that points to another webpage within your website.

The steps 1 and 2 are the same as above. When you come to choose the location just select the choose file button and find the webpage you want to link to and click on it. This file should be inside the same folder as all your other files. If it is not the website may not work when it is sent to the Internet.

To test the link, save the page and click on preview.
