F.T.P. is used to describe the sending of information from one computer to another via a network. F.T.P. is used in in two main ways:
The software used in this tutorial is WS.FTP light edition which is extremely popular, available for free and can be downloaded from the Webwise Downloads page.
Setting up WS-FTP le.
Once installed you can run WS-FTP. This is the setup screen. By clicking on new you can create a new profile. In this example it has been called Schoolzone because that happens to be the name of the Internet Provider for Ambleside Primary School. You could call it school website or anything else that is easy to spot in the list.
The parts you will need to fill in are: (this information will have been provided by your Internet Provider)
Host name: This looks similar to
a website address and is the address of your web server.
User ID: This will be unique to
your school. You should have a record of this somewhere.
Password: Again this will come from
your Internet Provider.
Account: You may have been given
instructions to enter another name here.
Your Internet provider may ask for other changes but it should be obvious
where to make them.
If you are using RM for Internet access, you may find they have extra
steps you need to take before transferring your files.
By selecting Save Pwd - your password will be saved so that you
do not have to type it each time.

When everything looks right just click on OK...
Uploading files to your server:
If you have a working Internet connection you should see a screen something
like this:

In the above example the folder called airschool (left) is not yet on the webserver (right). By highlighting the airschool filename and clicking the right pointing arrow in the middle, the file will be transferred. (Clicking on the left pointing arrow transfers files to your computer off the web - be careful you click the correct one otherwise you may overwrite your new files with your old ones.)
Voila - the page is available on the Internet almost instantly!
