These were put in when they laid the pipe line connecting Thirlmere, a reservoir near Keswick, to Manchester. These sandstone gateposts and iron gates were built so if there was a fault in the piping, they could follow the piping and fix it.

 
   
 
     
   
   
     
 

This gate is at the side of the wood, near a stream. You can see these gates all the way through the wood. Sometimes the walls are gone but the gates are still there. People find it strange that there are gates, but no walls round them
