"The Wall"

This is Hadrians Wall it is 79 miles long and it stretches from Carlisle to Sunderland. Every 5 or 6 miles was a fort which could hold hundreds of military soldiers.
Ten thousand soldiers usually guarded Hadrians wall.
The wall was often attacked from the north by Picts. When the Picts attacked, beacon fires were lit to warn others.
Soldiers from forts marched along the road behind the wall to deal with the Picts.
