Getting A Gerbil

If you are thinking of getting a Gerbil here is some advice:

You'll need somewhere secure to keep your Gerbil, an old fish tank is quite a good idea. You'll be able to see them clearly and they won't get cold. You'll need a strong mesh lid (Great Escape.) Bedding is very important, it needs to be soft and warm. You can buy gerbil bedding or give them clear paper tissue and small boxes to chew. You can cover the bottom of the cage with saw-dust, cat litter, try peat, or sand. If this is deep enough your Gerbil can make tunnels in it.

Clean water should be given daily in a bottle, not in a dish. If it is in a dish your gerbils bedding and wood shavings will get into the water. Your gerbil will need a supply of dried food in it's cage all the time and small amounts of fresh food daily. If it doesn't eat the fresh food you must take it out or it will go bad and make the cage smell bad.

Clean your gerbils cage out infrequently and always leave some of their bedding so that the cleaned cage feels like home when the gerbil is put back. Gerbils are very lively and so need handling with care. You should get them used to being handled from being babies and you should handle them daily. Never pick your gerbil up by it's tail or you might damage it. Gerbils need their tails for balance and so a tailless gerbil is a unhappy gerbil!
