ROBOTICS @ AMBLESIDE C.E. PRIMARY SCHOOL

REAL ROBOT WARS @ Ambleside

Do you think you are up to the challenges? Then get a small team together and see Mr Robinson. (Max 4 in a team)

Two teams will compete (on a rota) every week to design, build and program a robot and complete our special challenges. Winning teams will be listed here and, more importantly, earn effort points and house points.

REAL WORLD -CHALLENGE!
A visitor to our site, who works for a TOP SECRET government agency developing robots for the Air Force, Army and Navy, has been checking out our site for ideas!! - He has suggested we try to solve his problem:

"I am a project engineer, working for Land Systems Robotics, for the Defence Evaluation & Research Agency, which is a Government Agency which designs equipment and vehicles for the Army, Navy and Air Force. We work on larger robots but based on the same principle of some of your challenges and projects. One of our current objectives is to rid parts of the world from land mines or bombs using robots. What about a challenge based on this work? Design a robot to clear an area of 5 mines (coloured bricks). The robot would have to search and clear the area of mines. If it came across a mine it would have to eliminate every one. It would then play a tune once it has cleared the area of all 5 mines!"

Other Challenges:

CHALLENGE 1: "Speed Freak"

Construct a robot that can cross the school hall, touch the opposite wall and return in the shortest possible time.
(Hint: If the robot is damaged when it hits the other wall it is disqualified - Try some feelers at the front and back.)

CHALLENGE 2: "Ballet Bot"

Create the perfect dancing robot. It must carry out a 30-45 sec. series of spins, turns and movements in perfect synchronisation with it's designers. Extra points will be awarded for style, difficulty and impact!
(Hint: Use the 'beep' commands to create a regular rhythm to follow.)

CHALLENGE 3: "Circuit Breaker"

Construct a robot to complete two circuits of the test track following the black line in the shortest possible time. One lap in each direction. Times will be averaged. Double effort points for this one!
(Hint: You can use two light sensors if you need to.)

CHALLENGE 4: "Last Bot Standing"

It is all our war in this one! - Design a tough fighting robot to compete head to head against another team. The first robot to lose more than 5 pieces is out! You can also use up to two of our old 4.5 Volt Lego Dacta (blue) sets to add additional defences.
(Hint: You can build a hand controller if you wish. Strong construction is essential!)

CHALLENGE 5: "Photo Explorer Bot"

Build a tracked robot that will carry the digital camera across rough ground beneath the hedge and take a photo of the roots before returning.
(Hint: You can use the camera's self timer to help you if you wish.)

CHALLENGE 6: "The Sweeper"

Build a rubbish "collecting" robot that will travel back and forth across the classroom floor to collect as many lego pieces as possible
(Hint: Make the robot follow a pattern - Make your "sweepers" big!)

Challenge 7:"The Guardian of the Egg"

Visitors love to look at the Golden Egg. Your security guard robot must protect the golden egg from being taken from the egg cup. If someone can steal the egg without the alarm going off, your robot is OUT!
(Hint: Use light and touch sensors near or touching the egg to detect any movements.)
