People have always lived in the Lake District. In fact stone age people used to collect the hard volcanic rocks from nearby Langdale Valley to make stone axes. Some of these stone axes have been found as far away Southern France! Celtic tribes settled in this area and began farming. |

The Romans built a fort at Ambleside on flat ground near the lake. Archaeologists have discovered many coins, shoes and other bits and pieces. You can visit the Armitt Museum in Ambleside to see some of them. The Vikings came next and many of the names for places and lakes in the Lake District come from their language. |

Saxons and Normans made their homes here, some of these old buildings are still standing. They made dry stone walls to protect their sheep.

The Stuarts made many big houses from local stone. The Victorians made the Lake District into a tourist attraction. Many hotels and houses were made by the Victorians. They also made a railway to nearby Windermere and began to make passenger boats go up and down the lake of Windermere. |

Nowadays, we live here. Some of us live in Victorian houses. We go to a Victorian infant school. One day in the future our mural will be seen by other people and we will be just part of the timeline. |
