The skies above Ambleside
Pictures and facts by Grasmere
Class A beautiful sun shines on our mural. It
makes the grass and trees grow. It makes the water rise in
the air to start the water cycle. It gives us happy days
playing football in the park.
The sky on our mural shows the moon as
well. If you look carefully you will see a strange star near
the moon. It has a tail. This is not a star it is a comet.
When we were making the mural the comet "Hale-Bopp" was
visible in the sky. Comets can take hundreds of years to go
around the sun. It will be a long time before it comes back.
People will look at our mural and be able to tell when it
was made, just like the Bayeax Tapestry, which has a picture
of Halley's comet in the sky.
Yellow Mountain Rescue helicopters fly
above our school rescuing people from the hills who have got
into trouble. The helicopters sometimes land in Ambleside to
collect the Mountain Rescue Team. Most rescue helicopters
are Sea Kings. A helicopter landed in our school playing
field once and we were allowed inside.
You will see many military aircraft in
the sky above Ambleside. Jets such as, Harriers, Tornados,
Hawks and Jaguars, as well as turboprops such as Hercules.
You will also see Tucano training planes. The pilots use the
Lake District to practice for real battles.
