COOL FACTS.
- The Kent caused a major flood
in Kendal in 1964. £332,000 was given to try and stop the
flooding. It was one of the most important cases the council had
had to deal with. The river had to be widened near the putting
green in Kendal.
- The Kent is considered to be
the fastest flowing river in England because it's quite short
about 25 miles long, and drops over 1,000 feet from source to
estuary.
- There were 14 mills power by
the force of the River Kent. Some of the things the mills would
have made were snuff, textiles, bobbins, and gun powder.
- 20 years ago the Kent was one
of the best trout fishing rivers in the north. But this has all
changed due to pollution.
- The river doesn't meander a
lot at the beginning. But when it gets to the end it meanders much
more (not enough to leave oxbow lakes.)
- The flow of the River Kent
starts in the Lake District National Park, then goes out of it.
But when it goes into the sea it goes right on the edge of
it.
- Although the Kent ends at
Milnthorpe, it's estuary extends for another 6 miles to it's end
in Morecambe.
- The Kent has 2 tributaries the
Mint and the Sprint. The main one is the Mint, it has about 6
mills of it's own. The Sprint has about 4 mills of it's
own.
Although the River Kent is no
longer such an important part of the lives of the people of Cumbria,
it still is an important feature and is enjoyed by lots of people and
animals.
