Touch Typing

Are you still tapping at the keyboard with one finger?

Well this page will teach you how to "touch type." Touch typing means using all your fingers on the keyboard. When you can do this you will be able to type at incredible speed.

When you have got the hang of it you can try Mr Robinson's Online Typing Test at the bottom of this page - it will test your typing speed and give you a score in words per minute - cool.

1 - Finding the HOME KEYS

The home keys are where each finger hovers over when they are not typing.

Look at the keyboard.

The fingers on your left hand rest above:

A - S - D - F

The fingers on your right hand rest above:

J - K - L - ;

Your thumbs rest above the SPACE BAR

(If you look carefully you might see or feel little bumps on the F and J keys. These help you find the keys without taking your eyes off the screen)

As you begin to type, try to use the nearest finger to each letter. After a few minutes good practice it will get easier. You may already know where most of the keys are.

When you have pressed a key remember to bring your finger back to rest above it's home key.

2 - Using the SHIFT key with your little finger

If you need a capital letter, you do not need to use the CAPS LOCK key anymore. If you press the SHIFT key, which has an UP ARROW on, at the same time as pressing a letter key it will make a Capital letter appear. Your little fingers are ideal for this job because there is a SHIFT key on each side.

The shift key also lets you use the symbols and signs that are written on the top of the number and punctuation keys.
