Downloading:
All the following software will work on Windows 95/98 PC's
To download an item of software just click on it's download link. If you are using Internet Explorer you will be given a choice of saving the item or running it. Choose "Save" and select a location for it on your hard drive. When the file has finished downloading you can use Windows to find the .zip file and click on it.
All the programs are stored in .zip format. If you are using a New R.M. machine you will find an unzipping program is included with Window Box and your documentation will tell you what to do with zip files. Other users will need to download and install Winzip (available here) first.
Winzip is the industry standard archiving program. If you are using the Internet a lot you will certainly come across .zip files. Zip archives are very compact and download quickly. When you receive a .zip file you will need to unarchive it first.
The version included here is the fully working evaluation copy. If you wish, you may register for the full version which allows you to create self extracting .zip files. (Unlikely for a school.)

You will need some software to send your finished pages to the Internet. WS-FTP light edition is one of the most popular and well supported programs to handle File Transfer. See the Webwise tutorial on FTP to see how it works. The light edition is free to educational establishments. Registering gives you the Pro version that looks like Windows (this can be confusing)

Paintshop Pro
Paintshop Pro is one of the most popular graphics
programs for PC. Version 4 is an evaluation copy that works without
restriction, although if you find you are using the program a lot you are
required to register it. In return you will receive Paintshop Pro 5 which
has many more advanced features. The Paintshop Pro software is also available
on the Internet or on magazine CD-Roms.

JPEG Optomiser
The JPEG or.jpg format is used by digital cameras to store colour photographs. This clever program can dramatically reduce the size of Jpeg format pictures to decrease their downloading time on webpages. Very easy to use, it can be used by children to process a lot of pictures quickly. Registering gives you the latest version.

Free Website Templates for schools
Getting your first website online is not very easy. These Website Templates are small websites with preconstructed pages and links. All you need to do is add your own words appropriate to your school using a program such as Netscape Composer or Frontpage Express (free with Netscape).
Simply download the zip file for a template and save the contents into a folder on your hard drive.
Template 1 uses a list of links at the side to navigate.
